At-Home Remedies For Acne

Instead of using over-the-counter creams, lotions, or ointments to treat acne, why not use the natural at-home remedies for clearing the skin of excess oil, acne, and scars.

Home Remedies for Acne

1 – Acidic Foods

Citrus fruit (lemons and limes are particularly high in acidity), vinegar, or similar acidic foods are a great solution to flush the pores.

  • Squeeze the fresh fruit juice onto cotton wool
  • Gently wipe the affected areas of the face

2 – Aloe

Aloe has soothing and rejuvenating properties that can help to reduce scarring, fight infection, promote healing, and cool the burned skin.

  • Scrape fresh aloe gel from a plant (or use store-bought alternative)
  • Apply the gel to the skin using your fingers

3 – Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is rich in lactic and malic acid that helps to treat pimples, lessen red marks, and exfoliate. Use the raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar to benefit from its antifungal and antibacterial properties.

Prepare an effective facial toner:

  • Pour a small volume of raw, organic apple cider vinegar into a bottle
  • Dilute the apple cider vinegar with half water because it is quite powerful
  • Shake the bottle containing the mixture
  • Apply to the skin using cotton wool (avoid the sensitive eye area)

4 – Aspirin

Aspirin provides a variety of acne treatment options because of its salicylic acid (exfoliates skin and cleans out ports). Plus, aspirin is useful for reducing inflammation and drying up pimples.

  • Make a paste by crushing 5-7 tablets in a small amount of water (distilled is preferred)
  • Continue to mix the aspirin until at the right consistency
  • Apply to the skin (face, back, chest, etc.)
  • Leave in place for 10-12 minutes
  • Repeat up to 2 times per week

5 – Chamomile

Chamomile is appreciated for its ability to lessen the inflammation caused by acne.

  • Make a paste using the contents of a chamomile tea bag (all natural herbs and flavors) and a little water
  • Mix the ingredients until the preferred consistency is achieved
  • Apply the paste to the acne

6 – Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has antifungal and antibacterial properties. This oil extract is gentle and moisturizing, as well as having the ability to reduce redness and fight off bacteria.

  • Gently massage the unrefined, organic coconut oil into the skin
  • Leave in place for 3-4 minutes
  • Wipe off with a clean cloth or cotton wool
  • Apply the oil once or twice per day

Double the benefit of coconut oil by mixing in one of the antibacterial essential oils like tea tree or lavender

7 – Cornstarch

Cornstarch provides a natural remedy for pimples because of its soothing and gentle properties which help control the irritation and redness. Plus, this common cooking ingredient can also remove excess sebum and absorb oil from the skin.

  • Apply cornstarch to the affected areas of the face

8 – Cosmetic Clay

Use a cosmetic clay mask to lessen the appearance of pimples overnight.

  • Make a facial mask using 1 tsp of cosmetic clay with enough water (distilled) to create a thick paste-like consistency
  • Apply the paste to the affected areas of the skin
  • Leave in place for 15-20 minutes

9 – Echinacea

Echinacea has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties which are effective at treating the outbreak of acne. Plus, it can also double-up as a home remedy for preventing colds and flu and speeding up wound healing.

  • Soak a cloth in pre-prepared Echinacea tea and gently wash the face

10 – Egg Whites

Used as a facial mask, egg whites help to draw out impurities, reduce oil, and minimize the pores.

  • Separate the egg white and yolk
  • Discard the egg yolk
  • Apply the egg while to the skin using cotton wool
  • Leave in place for 10-45 minutes
  • Rinse the skin with warm water for an amazing glow

Green tea has antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds to aid the fight against acne.

  • Prepare a cup of green tea and leave to one side to cool
  • Use the cooled tea similar to a face wash

14 – Ice Cubes

Ice cubes help to close the pores, force out bacteria, and reduce inflammation.

  • Rub an ice cube on the affected areas of skin (splashing cold water on the face achieves similar results)

15 – Lavender oil

Lavender essential oils help to alkalize the body, relax the body, soothe achy muscles, and detox the body because the antibacterial steam opens the pores.

16 – Lemon Juice

Fresh lemon acts as a disinfectant, skin lightener, and exfoliants to help prevent the growth of new pimples and lessen the appearance of existing scars. The astringent and antibacterial properties in lemon help to suck out the oil and reduce the appearance of the blemishes.

  • Gently wash the face
  • Apply freshly squeezed lemon or lemon juice to a cotton ball and dab on the affected areas
  • Leave in place for 15-25 minutes

19 – Sodium bicarbonate

Sodium bicarbonate (or baking soda) acts as a natural remedy for acne by reducing breakouts and inflammation, while also helping to exfoliate the skin and remove the dead skin cells. This salt has the added benefit of reducing the appearance of old acne scars.

  • Make a paste by added 2-3 tbsp of baking soda to warm water
  • Continue to stir until a thick paste is achieved
  • Apply direct to the affected areas of the skin

  • Mix 2-3 drops of tea tree oil with water (equal measures)
  • Use cotton wool or similar to apply the solution to the affected area
  • Repeat the application up to 2 times per day (avoid more as this can dry the skin)
